Kira is a young coordinator at the age of 16. He used to be a student of the Lunar Prep school, back on the moon. That's where he first met Athrun and grew up together. Later on, after he departed the moon, he went to a nuteral place called "Heliopolis". This was a place that was making 5 prototype mobile suits that ZAFT was after. When ZAFT attacked, they had taken 4 of the prototype mobile suits and destroyed Heliopolis, leaving the "Strike" with Kira and the Archangel. Later on, Kira will be piloting the "Freedom" GUNDAM.
Athrun Zala is also a young coordinator at the age of 16. He's a soldier of ZAFT and lives in the PLANTS. His father, Patrick Zala, is the headmaster of the PLANTS. Athrun has a fiancee named Lacus Clyne and they're soon to be married. He is trying to get Kira to join ZAFT and leave the Earth Alliance Forces because of the accident on one of the PLANTS of the Bloody Valentine. He pilots the Aegis (one of the prototype mobile suits) and soon decides to pilot the Justice. He joins the Earth Alliance Forces to help Kira and the Archangel, after his father had betrayed him. Later on, he looses interest in Lacus and falls in love with Cagalli Yula Atha. He hopes that the war will end soon.
Cagalli Yula Atha is Orb's "Princess" and she has run away to Heliopolis to meet a professor for some answers. There, she bumped into Kira when ZAFT attacked the place. Although Kira had thought she was a boy, it hadn't bothered her as much as her fathers "betrayel". Cagalli was totally against having these 5 prototype mobile suits being made, because she thought that Earth was going to be in big trouble. Later on, she was shoved into a lifepod by Kira to escape Heliopolis because it was going to be destroyed. Many episodes later, she bumped into Kira AGAIN on a desert on earth. Instead of meeting Kira as a civilian, she met him as a soldier which angered her so much because she was so worried about him. Many episodes later, she had decided to help the Archangel by piloting a skygrasper, but got shot down by Athrun's plane because she was attacking them. When she crashed down on a small island, she found out that Athrun was on it too and that's where she met him and fell in love. Cagalli is a strong and a determined girl, who cares a lot for everyone and feels that the war should end.
Flay Allster is a young natural girl who was at Heliopolis when ZAFT attacked. She's one of Kira's classmates and escaped in a lifepod from heliopolis. Soon, Kira found a floating lifepod and brought it in the Archangel and found out that Flay was onboard that lifepod. Flay is Sai's girlfriend and seems to have a secret crush on Kira. When the Archangel was about to meet up with an upcoming Earth Alliance fleet that Flay's father was on, it was shot down by ZAFT and Flay blamed Kira for not protecting her father. Later on, she decided that she would have a fake relationship with Kira and make him believe that she actually loved him. Flay wanted Kira to keep on fighting until he died and said that it was the only was she was going to forgive her. Soon, Flay started to yell at Kira for not meeting up with his parents and that he shouldn't feel any sympathy for her. When Kira realized what Flay was up to, he broke up with her. Flay was devasted then, and she wanted to say that she was sorry for all those things, but then it was too late, Kira had already gone into battle. Near the end of the whole Gundam SEED series, Flay died and told Kira not to cry for her and that she was sorry for everything she's done. She told him, that she would always be there for him and would never let him down.
